CEMEX Innovation Holding – Switzerland
Our Facilities & Technology
The 3000 m2 of laboratory space are used for the following activities:
- Material Science – Physical & Chemical Characterisation. Specialists in our laboratory can evaluate any cement, supplementary cementitious material, and raw materials complementing the chemical characterization.
- Chemical: We have developed capabilities beyond the typical chemical and mineralogical analysis for almost any material, and amount.
- Process Laboratory Scale Simulation. The lab has the capacity to simulate the conditions in a large-scale clinker furnace or grinding mill on a laboratory scale as well as to follow the material’s changes as we burn or grind them.
- Organic Chemistry Admixtures are vital organic compounds in our businesses. We can characterize or discover its DNA and hence develop new admixtures or enhance existing formulations to increase our value offer to all our businesses.
- Concrete Area. This area has the capabilities and equipment to carry out the R&D of the most widely used material in the world. The different investigation techniques have been instrumental in the development of special concrete products, as well as simulate the industrialization with its pilot-scale batching plant that can help us understand actual full-size plant conditions and simulate transport in ready-mix trucks.
- Micro and nanostructure. Understanding from the microstructure to the nanostructure of materials is of vital importance for product development. The investigation techniques we use are: SEM – Scanning Electron Microscope and ESEM – Environmental SEM.
- Aggregates Evaluation. Characterizing and evaluating aggregates helps us develop special artificial aggregates like lightweight and determine their usefulness, and possible new sources of aggregates.
- Durability Environmental Simulation and Areas. We are able to simulate almost any environmental condition that our products may be exposed to. We can understand how long concrete takes to cure in freezing conditions, or how much water cement loses in hot weathers.
- Mechanical Testing: With strength being one of the main properties of our products, we go beyond the standard tests and have developed special fracture mechanics capabilities to evaluate to a greater extent our products and raw materials like fibers.
On top of all these capabilities related to the development of new products, CIH also counts with a team dedicated to support CEMEX plants worldwide in developing and deploying new technologies that improve our global operations.
