On average ArcelorMittal Gent invests around 85 million Euros a year, 15% of which are dedicated to environmental improvements. Core research centre or the ARM group is situated in Maizieres (FR), where most of the studies about CO/CO2 separation are performed.

- CARBON2VALUE project (Interreg 2 Seas 2014-2020, www.interreg2seas.eu/, separation of CO2 and CO)
- Steel2Chemicals (RVO project of DOW Nl) in which the decarbonised blast furnace gas CO- and H2-molecules are combined into naphtha, a feedstock for chemicals.
- Steelanol project (H2020-LCE-2014-2015: 65637, Demonstrating advanced biofuel technologies, www.steelanol.eu)
- TORERO: biomass carbonisation pilot, producing 32 kT/a of bio-coal for injection in the blast furnaces, to replace fossil carbon
